The TEMPEST members came onto the stage with a presence equivalent to that of their group name’s meaning. With the bright energy and powerful presence of a typhoon, one look at these charming boys will blow you away with a deep wind. Just based on first impressions, they are destined to be a new refreshing breeze in the world of K-Pop. The members shared their nervousness and excitement at finally being able to stand on stage after a long period of preparation. On Feb. 14, TEMPEST shared the first teaser of their title track ‘Bad News’. The teaser showed the members awakening to breaking news then showing off their vibrance and energy. As foreshadowed by the teaser, TEMPEST is coming onto the K-Pop scene and ready to be the next big thing. Each member then took the time to introduce themselves and their representative keywords and what they mean to them as a member of the group. EunChan’s keyword is ‘CLASSIC’. He thinks that his keyword represents his unique charm that only he will be able to contribute to the team. EunChan is TEMPEST’s sub-vocal. HwaRang’s keyword is ‘FREEDOM’. His keyword shows that he will not be stopped by anything as he shows different sides of himself naturally. HwaRang is TEMPEST’s main rapper and main dancer. Hyuk’s keyword is ‘POSSIBILITY’. Hyuk wants to become a source of hope to many people and their possibility. Hyuk is TEMPEST’s main vocal. LEW’s keyword is ‘PRESENT’. It has the double meaning of a gift and the current moment. So, he always wants to be a gift-like presence who is living in the moment for his fans. LEW is TEMPEST’s leader, lead rapper, and sub-vocal. HanBin’s keyword is ‘CHALLENGE’. His keyword is all about taking challenges without stopping in order to achieve a dream. HanBin is TEMPEST’s lead vocal and lead dancer. HyeongSeop’s keyword is ‘PASSION’. Passion was the driving force behind achieving his dream and is what brought him this far. HyeonSeop is TEMPEST’s sub-vocal. TaeRae’s keyword is ‘HAPPINESS’. He wants to find enjoyment in life through happiness. TaeRae is TEMPEST’s maknae and sub-rapper. TEMPEST is known for many of the members having been contestants on various survival shows such as “Produce 101 S2”, “Under Nineteen”, and “I-LAND”. When asked how they felt that this impacted their debut, HyeongSeop answered that he hoped that their experience would allow them to show a more professional side of themselves to their fans. The members went on to speak about their debut album “It’s ME, It’s WE”. The album name is representative of how each member’s individual charm has been put together to create a complete album and group. The title track ‘Bad News’ also serves as a piece of breaking news, letting K-Pop fans know that TEMPEST has arrived and is introducing their strong performance and bright energy. In fact, the members said that the album can be summarized into one phrase: breaking news. You can watch the full music video for ‘Bad News’ here. Before performing the song at their showcase, Hyuk shared that the killing verse of the song is the part that says, “Here comes TEMPEST.” HwaRang also showed us the point choreography, which is the part when the members are ‘riding skis’ and making side-to-side movements as if they are skiing. Their live performance was captivating, to say the least. The performance was striking, vibrant, and the song proved to be a bop that many fans will likely add to their playlists immediately. Although all of the members performed exceptionally, some other points to look forward to for their live performances include the rap line’s breaks in between the melody, which gives the song a sense of depth, and HanBin’s cute solo dance break.
Other songs on the “It’s ME, It’s WE” album include ‘Just A Little Bit’, ‘Find Me’, ’to YOU’, and ‘Bad At Love’. Each of these songs span across different genres and shows that TEMPEST is already quite a versatile group musically. It was then time for Q&A where we got to learn more about the TEMPEST members. One of the first questions that were asked was directed at leader LEW. Many fans have known him as EuiWoong for a while before his debut with TEMPEST and might be wondering why he has changed his name to LEW. LEW explained that he wanted to use his debut with TEMPEST as a new beginning and to show new aspects of himself as an artist. So, he took the initials of his name Lee EuiWoong (which he has a deep affection for) and shortened it into LEW. HanBin was also asked how it feels to be the only foreign member of the team (he is of Vietnamese nationality) and if he has had any difficulties until now. HanBin answered that he always chooses to think positively because he came to Korea to achieve his dreams and they are coming true. He also added that his members have helped him a lot and he is appreciative of all of the support from his fans, friends, and family. Kpopmap asked: What makes TEMPEST unique and different from other 4th generation male groups? And how are you going to show it? TEMPEST will consider the meaning of “I” (self) and show development through hyper-realism. This is why our first introductory series “Who Am I?” was posed as a question and our debut album with our honest stories embedded in it “It’s ME, It’s WE” came about as the answer. As a team, we’ll continue to release music about finding yourself that will move many people. Please do that with us! Thank you! HyeongSeop Just by listening to the highlight medley of TEMPEST’s debut album, I think the musical spectrum is quite wide. What kind of music do you want to pursue in the future and what kind of artist do you want to be remembered as by people? Like you’ve said, our debut album “It’s ME, It’s WE” is not just the title track ‘Bad News’ but also includes a lot of B-Sides of different genres. Each of the TEMPEST members’ charm, story, and what we can show is different so we want to show a lot of different performances to many people. We hope that a lot of people can sympathize with and enjoy TEMPEST’s music through that. Hyuk TEMPEST is gaining a lot of attention from K-Pop fans all over the world. Please greet international K-Pop fans and can you share how you plan to communicate with them in the future? We’ve been receiving a lot of support from international fans even before our debut so we wanted to express our gratitude. Thank you so much!! EunChan Even if our languages and cultures are different, we think that we relate to each other through the emotions and sincerity from TEMPEST’s music and performances. We hope that our music can become a language that connects us and that when the global situation gets better, we can meet fans in person and show you our bright energy. We hope to see you very soon! Thank you! LEW When asked again what kind of artists they want to be remembered as TEMPEST shared that they want to be a group that takes their own path and is remembered as legendary 10 years and 100 years from now. Among their short-term goals, they also want to receive a rookie of the year award and be able to meet their fans. TEMPEST seems fired up and ready to dominate the K-Pop scene. We can’t wait to see what this rookie group will achieve! What did you think of TEMPEST’s debut? Let us know in the comments.
